A Rose for Everafter is the twelfth episode of the second season of Castle.

Summary[]

Castle reconnects with a former girlfriend, Kyra Blaine, on her wedding day when one of her bridesmaids, Sophie Ronson, is found murdered. During the investigation, sparks fly between them once again and Beckett may have to deal with the possibility of being jealous.

Recap[]

At a hotel before a wedding, the bridal party knock on the door of a bridesmaid named Sophie. After they have a maid open the door, they see that the bed hasn't slept in, and Sophie isn't in the bathroom. The bride opens a wardrobe, and Sophie's body falls out.

In his penthouse, Castle has Alexis duct tape him to a chair so he can test how Nikki Heat can escape in the situation in his upcoming book. While he is restrained and gagged, to Castle's chagrin, Alexis takes money from his wallet so she can go shopping with Martha. As soon as Martha and Alexis leave, Castle's phone rings. He manages to make his way over to the phone but falls face first on the coffee table instead of being able to answer it.

At the hotel, Beckett hangs up the phone and meets up with Lanie in the room with the body. Lanie says Sophie was probably choked from behind. Also, her earring is missing, having been torn out of her lobe. Lanie reports Sophie was killed earlier that morning. Ryan states that the bride and groom are named Greg and Kyra. When he asks about Castle, Beckett snarks that he got cold feet.

Back at his apartment, Castle struggles to get the tape off of his mouth by using a garbage can lid. The trash can falls over and a partially open can falls out. He gets an idea.

While Beckett questions Greg and Kyra, she learns that they slept in separate rooms last night. They hadn't really spoken with Sophie while preparing for the wedding. Greg says Sophie was the one who introduced him and Kyra, but they haven't kept in touch over the years since she lived in Los Angeles.

Castle finally arrives at the hotel after freeing himself. Esposito notices Castle has duct tape stuck on his pant leg. As the men head towards the room, Castle wonders if the bridesmaid wouldn't be caught dead in her dress. Ryan states that he has sisters and their dresses were hideous. Castle explains that bridesmaids dresses are supposed to be ugly, and Beckett adds it's so the bride looks more beautiful in comparison. When Castle asks Beckett if she ever tore a picture of a wedding gown out of a magazine, Beckett says no but Castle, Ryan, and Esposito don't believe her. After meeting the bride, Castle recognizes her as his ex-girlfriend, Kyra. Kyra and Castle flirt while they remember the last time they saw each other.

Lanie shows Beckett several odd-shaped abrasions found on Sophie's back. Beckett tells Lanie about Castle's history with Kyra. Lanie asks if she's okay with it, to which Beckett denies it is affecting her.

Castle wonders why Kyra changed her mind about them being together. She introduces him to Greg, who recognizes Castle as Kyra's ex-boyfriend. Castle tells Beckett that Kyra is the woman that got away from him.

While interviewing the wedding party, Ryan learns Sophie was initially hesitant in coming to the ceremony. The best man, Mike, is missing. The guests report they saw Mike with Sophie last night but haven't seen him since. Beckett orders the hotel staff to search the grounds. Castle has the team review the footage taken by video cameras given to the wedding party. They watch Sophie slip away during the rehearsal dinner after she received a call that originated from the hotel lobby. They review surveillance video and see the call came from a drug dealer that Ryan recognizes as Boyd Gamble.

As Beckett and Kyra ride down an elevator, Kyra admits she still reads Castle's books. She knows that Castle only dedicates his books to people he cares about.

After the detectives bring Boyd to the station, he reveals Sophie asked him to sell her roofies. Castle encounters Sheila, Kyra's mother, who didn't approve of his relationship with her daughter. They trade some barbs with each other. The team finds Mike locked in a supply closet, angry with Sophie. He tells the team that Sophie drugged and trapped him. Sophie seemed like she was determined to sleep with him, but Mike now realizes it was too good to be true.

After talking with Mike, Beckett and Castle wonder what Sophie was doing last night. Beckett notices Ryan and Esposito eating appetizers and tells them to find out more about Sophie. In the meantime, Castle heads towards the ballroom to find Kyra cutting and eating her wedding cake. The two remember the times they had together and how they split up. Castle opens up to Kyra that he had been married twice, none of them were the one for him.

On the elevator with Beckett, Castle recounts how he and Kyra met and how long they been dating. Beckett notes that Kyra is different from his exes and wonders if the breakup was tough, but Castle claims it was a long time ago.

At the morgue, Lanie found traces of metal in the scratches on Sophie's back and sent a swab to the lab for results. Lanie asks Beckett about Castle and his college ex, and reminds her that the two of them have been working as partners every day, he wrote a sex scene about her in his book and she's not admitting that she's a bit jealous. Beckett still denies it and leaves, annoyed. Lanie yells out that despite her denials, everyone else can see what's going on.

After looking through Mike's room, they discover that Sophie used the best man's keycard she stole from him the night before to get into the adjoining room. There, they find Sophie's missing earring. Greg walks in, asking what they're doing in his room.

Back at the station, Greg reveals that he was sleeping when someone started to try to seduce him. At first, he thought it was Kyra, but when he found out it was Sophie, he pushed her off of his bed, which is probably how her earring fell off. She got up and rushed out of the room afterwards. Greg didn't say anything earlier because he knew how it would look. Castle refuses to believe him. The two men begin to argue when Castle suspects Greg of killing Sophie to cover up their affair. Greg demands Castle leave, and despite his protests, Beckett kicks him out.

Afterwards, Beckett tells Castle that she knew she would get more information out of Greg with him out of the room. Castle needs to keep his distance from Kyra because he's too emotionally close to the bride. Castle tries to deny it, but when Beckett suggests that Kyra committed the murder, he blows that off, saying she couldn't murder anyone. Beckett points out that's exactly what she means; on any other case, he would be weaving a tale about how the bride killed the bridesmaid because she found her coming out of her fiancé's room. Beckett warns Castle again to stay away from Kyra.

Castle goes home and pulls out an old picture of him and Kyra from when they were together. Martha walks in and admonishes him for digging up the past. Castle gets a call from Kyra, begging him to come meet her. He mentions their rooftop and she agrees to meet him there. Martha and Castle are both wary of this. On the roof, Kyra and Castle reminisce how they would come here to eat together while he wrote and she tried to study. Kyra was informed about Greg's encounter with Sophie and asks what she's supposed to do now that he is a suspect. Castle tells her he doesn't know. After he hugs Kyra to comfort her, they end up kissing.

The next day at the station, when Castle walks toward Beckett, she demands to know why he did it. Castle starts to make excuses, thinking Beckett is talking about his meeting with Kyra. However, Beckett pushes her chair out to show him her feet dangling off because it's too high. After sitting in his chair for a minute, Castle confesses to meeting up with Kyra last night. Beckett tells him she already knows, showing pictures of Castle and Kyra together on the roof. Castle thinks that Beckett was having him followed, but she points out Kyra is a suspect in a murder, so they were tailing her.

Esposito approaches with the lab results confirming that Greg wasn't in Sophie's room. Ryan arrives and reveals that although Sophie didn't show up at the hotel until Friday, she arrived in the city on Thursday. Beckett wants them to go over everything that Sophie did from the moment she arrived.

Ryan and Esposito interview the wedding party again one at a time and discover that Sophie was broke; at Greg and Kyra's engagement party, she was even looking for someone to loan her the money to come to New York for the wedding. However, she was still out in New York shopping somehow.

After further investigation, the team discovers that Sophie has been getting a lot of money from somewhere; she paid her last three rent payments and funded her weekend at the wedding in cash. The weekend alone would have cost around $3000. Ryan shows up with a surveillance video from the bridal shop in which Greg's Uncle Ted is going dress shopping with Sophie. They also discover that Ted was the one paying her. They arrest Ted and bring him to the station.

While Ted is sitting in the interrogation room, Greg gets upset, claiming that since the police can't find evidence to pin the murder on him, now they're going after his uncle. Greg sarcastically wonders if next they're going to tell him that Ted is in love with Kyra too. Castle gets riled up and asks what he means. Greg accuses Castle of still being in love with Kyra, then expresses that he himself loves her more than anything. Beckett breaks up the argument by mentioning the evidence they have on Ted, including the video. Greg is confused since Ted barely knew Sophie, but suggests his uncle decided to help her out with her financial troubles out of goodwill. Greg explains Ted has been nothing but supportive of the wedding and lists everything his uncle has done for him and Kyra, including filing for the wedding license and helping write the prenup. Greg starts to say that Ted looks after something but suddenly stops. He gets worried and goes to make a phone call.

A while later, Castle and Beckett come into the interrogation room. Ted complains avidly about waiting for a very long time. Beckett and Castle apologize, but state they had some things they needed to look into before they could talk to him. Beckett pulls out some paperwork and asks if Ted knows what it is. Ted is upset that they went through his office, but Beckett assures him they got a warrant first. Ted claims the estate paperwork is too complicated for her to understand. Beckett and Castle are unimpressed and proceed to lay out what happened.

Greg has a $2 million trust fund that his grandparents set up for him to receive when he got married, and Ted was the executor. Five years ago when Ted lost his money on bad investments, he started using Greg's trust fund for his own lavish lifestyle. Since Greg wasn't supposed to gain access to the money until his wedding day, Ted thought he had plenty of time to fix the situation. However, when Greg and Kyra got engaged, Ted didn't have enough equity to replace all of the fund, so he came up with a plan to get the wedding cancelled. Ted paid Sophie to sleep with Greg so that Kyra would break it off, but he hadn't counted on the fact that Greg actually loved Kyra. After failing to seduce Greg, Sophie went back to her room to find Ted there and told him she couldn't go through with it. Ted then killed Sophie, knowing her murder would also cancel the wedding.

Ted believes they have no proof but Beckett pulls out two pieces of evidence from his luggage: Sophie's wedding video camera which has her fingerprints and his platinum tiepin. Beckett reveals they found scratch marks with traces of platinum in Sophie's back from when she was being strangled. Ted's tiepin is platinum and matches them perfectly. Castle adds that Ted obviously wasn't aware that the tiepin left marks on Sophie's back and would connect him to her body, so he didn't care to throw it out or even clean it.

Afterwards, Castle is playing Sophie's recording to Kyra in which Greg rejects her advances. Castle notes that Greg's loyalty to Kyra foiled his uncle's plan and assures her that he really loves her. Kyra says she loves Greg too, but she'll still think about Castle sometimes. They find closure with each other. Beckett tries not to pay attention to the couple. Kyra walks out of the conference room and stops at Beckett's desk, telling her, "He's all yours." After Kyra leaves, Beckett thoughtfully looks at Castle.

Later, Castle and Beckett attend Kyra and Greg's delayed wedding. After the bride and groom kiss, Kyra tosses the bouquet directly towards Beckett, who catches it with surprise.

Quotes[]

Beckett: Apparently, Castle has a history with the bride.
Lanie: Ancient, modern or sexual?
Beckett: Seems like all of the above.
Lanie: You're okay with that?
Beckett: Yeah. Why wouldn't I be? Just keep me posted on the labs.
Lanie: Mm-hmm.
Kyra Blaine: I feel like I know you a little, from Nikki Heat, the dedication.
Beckett: Oh.
Kyra: I still read all of Rick's books.
Beckett: Yeah, well, most of that book is just a result of Castle's overactive imagination.
Kyra: It's funny that you call him that, "Castle." When I knew him, he was just "Rick," fresh off his first best-seller. Well, overactive imagination or not, I know he only dedicates his books to people he really cares for.
Castle: You want to take advantage of a guy, knocking him unconscious kind of defeats the purpose. Best way? Just ask.
Mike: Yeah. Nuts, right? I mean, who roofies a guy? All a girl has to do is ask.
Castle: We met in college. We were together nearly three years.
Beckett: I didn't ask.
Castle: Yes, you were not asking very loudly.
Beckett: She's different from your ex-wives.
Castle: What do you mean?
Beckett: She's real. I didn't think you went for real. Tough break up?
Castle: It was a long time ago.
Beckett: Anything else?
Lanie: You tell me.
Beckett: What?
Lanie: Don't "what" me. Castle’s lost love.
Beckett: Yeah. What about it?
Lanie: Girl, I'm gonna smack you. You work side by side every day. He writes a sex scene in his book about you that had me reaching for ice water. Now, little miss bride shows up. Don't tell me you're not the least bit jealous.
Beckett: Oh, please. You've been inhaling too many autopsy fluids.
Lanie: Honey, just because you can't see what’s goin' on doesn't mean anyone else doesn't see what's going on!
Beckett: Shuuut uuuup.
Lanie: Mm-hmm. 'Cause I see it. You may not, but I do.
Ryan: What? I have sisters. You should've seen their dresses--hideous.
Castle: Ah, bridesmaid dresses are supposed to be hideous.
Esposito: Really? Why?
Beckett: So that the bride looks more beautiful in comparison.
Castle: Ah, see? Tell me you never tore a picture of a wedding gown out of a magazine.
Beckett: I've never torn a picture of a wedding gown out of a magazine.
Castle: You're lying. She's lying.
Ryan: Mm-hmm.
Esposito: Mm-hmm.
Castle: She's the one that got away.
Castle: Kyra Blane. Wow.
Beckett: I take it she was someone very special.
Beckett: When I'm not here, do you guys braid each other's hair and debate who's the coolest Jonas brother?
Esposito: No. But it's totally Nick.
Ryan: Absolutely Nick.
Esposito: Yeah. Kevin's the talented one.
Ryan: Yeah, Nick's the cute one. Joe?
Kyra: If I have to listen to my mother judge me anymore, I might start taking hostages.
Castle: I understand completely.

Trivia[]

  • This episode is akin to the later episode "Little Girl Lost". Beckett encountered her ex-boyfriend, Will Sorenson, for whom she still had unresolved feelings. Castle's recap to Beckett of his relationship with Kyra in the elevator almost exactly mirrors the conversation from that episode where Beckett describes her relationship with Sorenson.
  • Castle's relationship with Kyra lasted nearly three years; beginning at the time when he'd gotten his first best-seller published. Kyra asked for a break in the relationship, but then never spoke to him again.
    • Beckett tells Castle, "She's real. I didn't think you went for real." In view of the way Castle's romance with Kyra ended, the string of shallow relationships with shallow women that Castle is famous for, may simply be a way for him to avoid having his heart broken again.
  • Beckett states that she's been a bridesmaid six times.
  • This is the episode where Beckett suddenly realizes she might have feelings for Castle.
  • Watch for: Beckett when Kyra comes up to her, telling her that Castle's all hers and at the wedding, Kyra tosses her bouquet towards Beckett's direction, and she catches it!
  • When Beckett told Castle that if things had worked out between him and Kyra, he'd be spending holidays with Kyra's mother, Castle reacts by shuddering and gagging.
  • When Castle asks Beckett if she ever torn a picture of wedding gown out of a magazine, she denies it but he, Esposito, and Ryan can tell she's lying.
  • This is the first wedding Castle and Beckett go to together, but it definitely isn’t the last.
