Dan Tonelli was the original head of a call-girl-ring, where he used a nickname "Danton" as a business name in "Love Me Dead".

The vice arrested Tonelli and provided the DA Jack Buckley with enough evidence to lock him away for twenty years, but Tonelli only got seven. It turns out that Buckley offered him a deal: Tonelli would get thirteen years out of his sentence, if he turned over the call girl ring to Buckley, who became the new "Danton". Tonelli gave Buckley the client list and the girls hired in the business.

When Buckley was murdered, Tonelli was brought into the police station for an interview. Castle and Beckett hoped that he could tell them information to track down the new Danton. Tonelli wasn’t much cooperative, but when he learned that Buckley was dead and that the police thought the new Danton killed him, he laughed and said that in that case, it would be a suicide. That answer made Beckett and Castle realize that the new Danton was Jack Buckley himself.
