Eddie Gordon was a former street hood, the absolute antithesis of Odette Morton, and thus the ideal casting choice for the producers of "A Night of Dance", which preceded A Dance With Death.
He was to "bring the drama", and he did, on and off-set, which is why, when Odette turns up dead, Eddie's is the first name on many lips.
The show's policy of bringing back the last contestant eliminated if one of the current crop is unable to continue, means that Odette getting bumped off bumps Eddie to the head of the line.
Combined with his history of violence, and recorded threats against "Miss Sweet and Innocent", Eddie is the early front runner in Beckett and Castle's eyes, but this is a race full of dark horses, and a truly vital ringer.
He did have an alibi, but was able to give useful information to the police, as he had seen Odette (Barbra) talk to a man in an alley and give him some money.
