Gregory Volkov was an expert international Russian criminal and most feared KGB operative.
During a mission, Castle's dad, known under the alias Jackson Hunt, ended up killing his wife twelve years earlier. Volkov went after Hunt but was captured and thrown into a Chechen prison.
After escaping from prison, he sought revenge on Jackson Hunt and orchestrated an elaborate kidnapping of Jackson Hunt's granddaughter, Alexis Castle.
He ended up taking her friend Sara El-Masri as collateral damage and due to her being the daughter of wealthy higher ups in Cairo, this lead the authorities to believe that Sara was the target when it was really Alexis that was the real target, and that it would make international news so as to get Hunt's attention.
He was able to have both of the girls successfully make it to Paris where he took them captive. Realizing that he did not need Sara El-Masri, he had her released from his captivity and sent back to her family.
While the FBI was stumped as to why Volkov didn't release Alexis, Castle, Alexis' father, went to Paris to enlist the services of Jacque Henri to find her. But when Henri found out that it was Volkov who kidnapped Alexis, he betrayed Castle in exchange for a bribe.
But as Volkov's men were about to execute Castle, they were killed by Jackson Hunt instead. Volkov then contacted Hunt via Castle's cloned cellphone, demanding that he turn himself in or he would kill Alexis. However, Hunt knew that Volkov would kill Alexis either way if he showed up or not.
During a rescue attempt, Castle was captured by Volkov and his men, although he was unaware that Castle did this on purpose. He then had one of his men give him Castle's radio, unaware that it contained an explosive, and moments later he was killed along with his men and Castle and Alexis were freed soon after by Jackson Hunt.
