Jared Swanstrom was a mechanic and rehabilitated ex-con by the time of "Ghosts".
Although Swanstrom still bore a burden of guilt for his role in making the bomb which crippled Captain Sam Pike, and killed his friend, and co-conspirator, Susan Mailer.
As Beckett and Castle's investigation proceeded, they discovered that he was not, in fact, culpable for his friend's death, since Susan Mailer did not perish in the explosion, although she was caught in the blast and severely injured.
Cynthia Dern, who for twenty years had masqueraded as Allison Goldman, was essentially the guilty party, since she, even when made aware of the captain's return, went ahead and set the bomb.
Susan was injured trying to defuse the device, and the whole mess was only finally untangled after Cynthia attempted to murder Susan, whom she discovered had survived, and Susan, in self-defense, turned the tables.
