John Allen is an unemployed former insurance salesman who turns up deceased in a tree at the opening of "Deep in Death".
He then appears again, still dead, in an alleyway with his internal organs removed, since as the coroner's van was taking him away it was hijacked at gunpoint by masked men. John, it turns out, had failed to inform his wife, Sandy, when he lost his job months before, and out of desperation he took a gig as a drug mule. This involved swallowing balloons filled with the drugs to bring them over the border from Mexico.
His 'sponsors' discovered he was missing with their product and assumed the worst - that he'd done a runner - but when they saw his body in the tree and cops all around they had to re-strategize. John had tried to pull himself out of his troubles without 'bothering' his wife, but sadly, the consequences were likely to prove lifelong for both of them.
