John Raglan was the presiding detective in Johanna Beckett's murder.[1]
He was previously the arresting officer on Bob Armen's case, but in reality he and his friend Gary McCallister and their rookie pal Roy Montgomery had killed Armen,[2] the three of them framing mobster Joe Pulgatti for Armen's death.[3]
Years later, upon learning that he was dying of lymphoma, Raglan attempted to tell Kate Beckett the truth about her mother's death during a meeting in a diner.
Beckett was accompanied by Richard Castle, as Raglan had asked that she not bring any cops with her, but he was shot by Hal Lockwood from a nearby building before he could say anything incriminating. ("Knockdown")
