Biography[]

Doctor Valerie Monroe was a physician at County General Hospital in New York. A devoted and kind doctor, she considered the hospital her family.

Some months earlier, Monroe treated former drug lord Cesar Calderon after he suffered a heart attack. Calderon subsequently asked her to become his personal physician. Monroe spent five nights a week at Calderon's penthouse to see to his care, with their relationship becoming close over the following months to the point that he gifted her a unique bracelet that had belonged to his mother. However, Calderon denied that there was ever any physical romance in their relationship.

At the same time, Monroe was approached by Leonard Maloney of the District Attorney's office to investigate recent drug theft and possible criminal activity at the hospital. Although she was able to begin tracing the suspicious activity to Nurse Greg McClintock - who was in regular contact with his girlfriend, Amy Porter, a prisoner serving a life sentence for a crime that she had been falsely accused of - Manuel Calderon, having witnessed Monroe's meetings with Maloney, became convinced that she was actually investigating Cesar.

Confronting her as she left work one night, Manuel hit Monroe in the head to render her unconscious and used a needle to deliver an injection of air directly into her carotid artery, causing Monroe to suffer an aneurysm. Taking her body to a nearby funeral home, Manuel attempted to conceal Monroe in a coffin that was scheduled for burial the following day. However, the additional weight of an extra body in the coffin caused the pallbearers to stumble, resulting in Monroe's body falling out of the coffin and her death being subsequently exposed ("Anatomy of a Murder").
