Vivien Marchand is a character portrayed by Patricia Tallman in the ABC crime series Castle.
Character[]
Background[]
Vivien Marchand was a celebrity psychic with a significant reputation.
She apparently once had a meeting with Castle where she correctly predicted that a beautiful woman would move into his loft and never leave (Castle reflecting later that Vivien neglected to mention that the woman in question would be his mother).
Vivien also claimed that she had used her abilities to help the police catch various criminals, but a check with the police departments stated that they had never heard of her (although Castle speculated that they may have been lying to maintain their image).
History[]
Attempting to regain her old standing, Vivien planned to reveal another murder, but was killed by the murderer she was about to expose. However, the team were able to deduce what had happened thanks to Vivien's contact book, some advice from her daughter Penny - who claimed to have inherited some degree of her mother's gift - and a letter that Vivien had apparently sent before her death detailing the circumstances surrounding her murder.
Although Beckett remained skeptical of Vivien's psychic powers even after the case was solved, Castle noted that the letter's contents and the time it would have to have been sent by meant that the only alternative was the killer sent it as part of some complex bluff, which was still too detailed to work considering the narrow time frame ("He's Dead, She's Dead").
Trivia[]
- Continuing the show's long running tradition of working oblique references to sci-fi TV into its stories, Vivien was played by Patricia Tallman, the actress who also played the powerful telepath Lyta Alexander in Babylon 5.
